What do you do when your trousers are too long?
You just got a new pair of trousers but they’re a bit too long…
Nothing is more annoying than walking on the trouser legs all the time, apart from making your trousers wet and dirty from that, it can also cause the hem to come out or even break completely. Also, it sometimes looks slouchy in my opinion.
Still, trousers are better off being too long than too short, as taking them in is easier than lengthening them. Don’t own a sewing machine? We explain to you how you can take your trousers in, without the use of a machine.
What do you need to take your trousers in?
You will need seam ripper, pins, a tape measure, scissors, an iron and a hemming tape so you don’t need a needle and thread.
- Remove the hem, using a seam ripper or other sharp knife to loosen the seam.
- Put the trousers on with shoes. The length of the trouser leg should be fine with having shoes on.
-You can also grab a pair of trousers from your own closet that has the ideal length and use it as an example. Cut your trousers 3cm longer than that length (leaving extra centimeters for a hem). - Now turn the trouser legs inwards to the desired length. Secure with pins. When you are satisfied you can carefully take off the trousers. Using a measurement tape or ruler, check that the hem is even on both legs and iron this hem.
- Remove the pins and put a line three centimeters below your fold line. Do this at both pant legs and cut along the line.
- Cut a piece of the hemming tape and place it along the fold. Make sure the hem band lies completely straight along the fold between the leg and the hem.
- Now take the iron again and iron the hem band. This will ensure that the hem band adheres to both layers of fabric. Do this long enough until the hem is secured overall, your trousers are ready!
WHAT IS THE RIGHT TROUSER LENGTH FOR ME?
According to etiquette, women’s trousers should end in the middle of the heel. This would make your legs look visually slimmer.
But, of course, we also have fashion. Wide-leg trousers or flared trousers are often allowed to be slightly longer. Also because you can wear these styles well with heels. If you do, the trouser leg fall over the hem and you get longer-looking legs. In summary, the slimmer trousers should reach the ankles and the wide trousers almost to the ground.
